The village of San Donato in Poggio - far 21 km from Florence and 25 km from Siena - is one of the oldest fort-towns in the Chianti region.

The origin of the settlement is however traced back to even earlier times when Chianti was inhabited by the Etruscans, a people who possessed advanced technology and knowledge in many fields. They found the area conducive to the development of a civilisation particularly sensitive to beauty and the worship of nature.
The construction of the fortifications dates back to Roman times and San Donato was considered a strategic outpost against the invasion of northern European populations, as well as a major trading centre and shelter for pilgrims on the Via Francigena heading towards the capital. Various references are made to the town starting in the year 1000 in which the settlement is called “Castrum” or “castle”.
It is still possible to admire the perfectly-preserved 13th century walls at the original lookout tower, which stands at the western end of the ring of walls and at the two ancient town gates: Porta Senese to the south and the impressive Porta Fiorentina on the north side. Its strategic geographical position on the border between the provinces of Florence and Siena, has meant that San Donato has repeatedly played a key role in historic battles between two powerful lords. Chronicles report that San Donato was the campsite of the Florentine troops on the eve of the famous Battle of Montaperti.
The heart of the town is the Piazza Malaspina with its octagonal well, near to which is the Renaissance palace that belonged to the aristocratic family, recently renovated and home to interesting events and artistic and cultural events.
The beautiful Romanesque church (12th century), located just outside the walls, boasts a wooden crucifix of the Giotto school, a baptismal font in glazed terracotta by Giovanni della Robbia (1513) and other fourteenth century paintings. At the Shrine of Pietracupa, also not far from the village, is a Madonna and Child attributed to the school of Masaccio, a large seventeenth-century canvas by Passignano and other works of great finesse and quality.
