Rent a holiday home in Lauwersmeer for an unhurried vacation
Located to the north of the Netherlands, bordering the provinces of Groningen and Friesland, Lauwersmeer was formed in 1969, when the Lauwers Sea was enclosed and separated from the Wadden Sea. The unforgettable landscapes are defined by sprawling grasslands, leafy forests, orchid fields, ponds, and reed bushes. The Lauwersmeer National Park
The central and eastern parts of Lake Lauwersmeer are part of the Lauwersmeer National Park, established in 2003 to protect the newly-formed natural area, and especially to preserve the region's endangered flora and fauna, such as the purple Dactylorhiza maculata. A haven for both serious and amateur birdwatchers, the park shelters species such as the Eurasian Spoonbill, the Montagu's Harrier, the Bearded Reedling and the Bluethroat. A series of neatly laid out vantage points and bird-watching facilities allow visitors to observe the birds without disturbing them. Lauwersmeer greatly facilitates the migration pattern of the birds by serving as a breeding ground and a refueling station.The local Konik horses and Highland cattle are also animal favorites for families with children.
Adventure and Other Activities
Sports enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice in Lauwersmeer, as the area can be well explored by hiking, boating, and cycling. A local Tourist Information Office offers detailed information on cycling and walking routes. Equipment is easy to rent -- ask the host at your holiday home, holiday house, holiday rental or holiday apartment for more information. For adventure on the water, Lauwersmee is great for canoeing, surfing, sailing, and motor boating. Camping out in the open under the stars is another option. A visit to Lauwersmeer can easily be combined with a dayrip to the island of Schiermonnikoog. The characteristic village of Zoutkamp falls on a popular cycling route, and is where visitors pause for a delicious meal of fresh fish, and for a look at the Visserijmuseum (Fishery Museum). Lauwersmeer is decidely different, and certainly merits a visit.
