show more are large and sunny. Around town there is Mediterranean vegetation made up of olive, lemon and palm and trees and laurels all celebrating the changing seasons. Here, where the Lake ends in the foothills of the Dolomites of Brenta, the tourist can try any of the numerous attractions that Riva has to offer: history, art, sport and nature, but also a warm welcome, hotels of the first order and restaurants serving local fare. There are many examples of Riva’s thousand year history, unmistakeable signs of civilisation, of surviving art and culture which bring us from the turbulent times of Medieval Ages to the dominance of The Signori. In the centre of the city, making a window onto the Lake, is a constant reminder of the past, starting at the Piazza III Novembre built in the Lombard-Venetian style and where you find the Apponale Tower, erected in 1220, the Pretorio Palace, built by Cansignorio della Scala in 1375 and the Palazzo del Comune built pre 1200 and rebuilt by the Venetians at the end of the Fifteenth Century. A short distance away the coastal defence, La Rocca, was erected in 1124, which today holds the Civic Museum and Art Gallery. Some valuable examples of Baroque architecture are represented in the Church of Inviolata and the Church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption “S.M. Assunta”. Riva del Garda encourages its visitors to take part in the sports found here, suitable for every level of energy: sailing, windsurfing, fishing, walking, boules, cycling, tennis, climbing and rowing.
